Milestones in Wales

Children’s Commissioner for Wales set up In 2001
Wales became the first country in the United Kingdom to have a Children’s Commissioner.
 

Development of Funky Dragon
Funky Dragon, the Children and Young People’s National Assembly for Wales was developed in 2002.
 

Participation Consortium initiation
The Participation Consortium is a multiagency strategic body. It is working at a national level to develop capacity and practice in terms of the participation of children and young people (0-25 years) in decision-making in Wales.
 

Establishment of the Participation Unit
The Unit acts as a focal point and supports the strategic development of Children and Young People's participation in Wales
 

Development of the Participation Workers’ Network for Wales
The Participation Workers’ Network for Wales was set up in 2006 to support organisations and practitioners to promote participation through their work with children and young people.


Reach the Heights initiative begins
In May 2009 £49m was awarded to 8 organisations as part of the Reach the Heights initiative. 


Pupil Voice Website launched
With the School Councils Regulation making it a requirement for all schools in Wales to develop a school council, the Pupil Participation Project in the Welsh Assembly Government developed a website to assist schools to do this.


Getting it Right
Getting it Right is a 5 year Action Plan by the Welsh Assembly Government that lays out the priorities in response to the Concluding Observation of the last UNCRC Monitoring Group.
